If you don’t know the next talent in our Designer Spotlight series, do you really even like fashion? We’re talking about Designer, Founder/Director of Midwest Fashion Week, and family man, Berny Martin of Catou. Dedicating his line to men and women’s professional wear, this fashion design icon has grown from Indiana-based designer to internationally known in just over a decade. Take a moment to learn a little more about Berny and his amazing accomplishments, and don’t forget to snag your tickets to Fashion for a Cause, taking place in Indianapolis on November 22, 2019.
Like many in the fashion industry, Berny’s love for design started early. He recalls crafting his first design as a child with the help of his grandmother: a pair of jeans. As an adult, Berny studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and went on to start his own label, Catou, in 2005, which he lovingly named after his grandmother who helped bring his dream to life. The Catou collection focuses on perfectly tailored men’s and women’s suits, in addition to gowns. A true creative mind, he gains inspiration from almost anywhere, from a walk in his neighborhood to travels across the world. Believing that fashion is personal to each individual, his goal as a designer is to uncover a client’s true self and help them express it through fashion.
Over the years, Berny has been recognized on a variety of outlets ranging from local productions and publications to MTV, BET, Time Magazine, and everything in between. He has received many honors, including the Couture Man Excellence Award in 2016, as well as being named as a United Nations Association Young Professional in 2009. His recognition extends to the likes of celebrities, including Indycar driver Helio Castroneves, Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez, Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, New York Knicks’ JR Smith, actor Billy Porter, and actress Taraji Henson, among countless others, who have all been spotted wearing Catou designs.
In addition, he found the time to found Midwest Fashion Week in 2006, which leads us to where we are today! How’s that for a success story?! Don’t miss his latest collection on the runway later this month–get your tickets now!
