Located just north of Indianapolis is the quaint village of Zionsville. Bakeries, restaurants and retail shops line the charming brick streets, but you’d never guess that this small town is home to a boutique reminiscent of something you’d uncover in Paris. None the less, that’s exactly what Lesley Hunt has created.
Inspired by her impeccably dressed grandmother, who was a dressmaker for more than 70 years, Lesley has an eye for fabric and fit, offering something truly unique to the Midwestern fashion scene. Her store, Lesley Jane, has an ever-changing collection featuring the latest trends bought in small quantities so you can be sure that your purchases are one-of-a-kind–and a visit to her store is a treat in itself! Let’s learn a little more about Lesley Jane from Lesley herself.
Lots of boutique owners describe their store as an ‘experience’. Describe the Lesley Jane experience.
The store has an uncluttered, East coast/European vibe. I buy in small quantities, so I can keep the looks fresh and react to trends quickly, and I always buy pieces–rather than collections–so I always have what is new, different, and will update an existing wardrobe. I love fabrics, so I am always drawn to comfortable pieces that flatter, rather than hide your shape.
I have to say that I’ve been in your store multiple times and I love the vibe! It’s very warm and inviting. What would you say makes Lesley Jane different from other boutiques?
I curate each season – offering the best trends, as well as wardrobe staples, at very reasonable prices. And when I say ‘curate’ I really mean it. I am very picky and I won’t settle for just ‘okay’. So, there’s an ebb and flow to my merchandise mix. Every day, I’m searching for new vendors and buying items that I think are great style at a great price.
We’re kind of in a transition period between Winter and Spring. What trends do you covet right now?
Shirring, smocking, and the focus on sleeves – balloon, draped, sheer, you name it. I love not only the soft muted pastels, but also the pops of bright color, as well as large and small floral prints.
Okay, last question is a fun one: what is one piece you think every Midwestern girl needs in her closet?
Well, this might not seem like the most original answer, but I think everyone should have a simple, go-to LBD. It has to be versatile – so you could wear it with a jacket for work related activities, or dress it up for a special event.
